Advancing English Language Education in Turkey: Strategies and Challeng
English education is an integral part of life in nearly all countries. It has gained great
importance in Turkey, one of these countries. However, individuals who have studied English
for years in Turkey are often found to have deficiencies in many skills. For example, people
cannot improve themselves effectively in terms of listening and speaking. We can examine
the main reasons for these deficiencies in two categories: the first is system- and method based reasons, and the other is teacher- and student-based causes.
Firstly, we should evaluate the systematic and methodological deficiencies in English
education in Turkey. While the old methods used in classrooms, such as grammar translation
and the direct method, enable students to focus on grammar and vocabulary, they are
insufficient in developing other skills. Therefore, students’ communicative abilities remain
weak due to the exam-oriented perspective imposed by the system. At the same time, the
classroom environment in which the course is taught is often not large enough, and the
resources provided by the state are few and not well-equipped. This situation also restricts
students from learning English in an interactive and engaging way.
Secondly, we ought to look into the disadvantages caused by teachers and students.
Unfortunately, a foreign language teacher trained in this type of education system is often
unable to apply the language in practical contexts. Many teachers cannot master speaking or
current teaching methods such as Communicative Language Teaching and Task-Based
Learning. Thus, students’ language learning becomes passive, and their motivation decreases.
To overcome these problems, the education system should move away from being examfocused and become more related to real-life communication. Teachers who do not have good
speaking skills can be sent to training programs abroad to improve themselves and gain more
experience. The use of technology can make English learning more effective. For instance,
online platforms, videos, and language-learning applications can help students practice
outside the classroom. Schools can also teach English with modern approaches by integrating
artificial intelligence-supported classes and interactive learning environments.
In conclusion, foreign language education in Turkey needs several important
improvements. Students should have more opportunities to practice speaking and use the
language in real life. Teachers also need better training and modern materials to make lessons
more interesting and effective. If these changes are made, learning English will become
easier, more enjoyable, and more successful for students in Turkey.
