Foreign Language Learning and Teaching In Turkey Should be Improved

Today, learning a foreign language is very important for people all around the world. It helps people find good jobs, study abroad, and meet people from different countries. In Turkey, many students start learning English at a young age and continue for many years. However, most of them cannot speak or understand it well after all those years. This situation makes students and teachers feel disappointed. The main reason is that the way English is taught in schools is not very effective. Lessons are often based on books and grammar rules, not on real communication.

One big problem in Turkey is that language education is too exam-focused. Students usually study English only to pass tests or get good grades. Teachers often prepare them for exams that ask grammar or vocabulary questions. Because of this, students do not learn how to speak or write naturally. They memorize many rules but forget them easily because they do not use them in real life. This makes English lessons boring and stressful for many students. To make things better, schools should give more importance to speaking and communication activities. For example, students can make short presentations, talk about daily topics, or work in pairs. Teachers can use games, songs, and real-life dialogues to make lessons more fun. When students use English in these ways, they will feel more confident and motivated to learn.

Another problem is that students do not use English outside the classroom. After school, they speak only Turkish, so they forget what they learned. They also do not have many chances to hear English in their daily life.

Teachers are one of the most important parts of language learning. In Turkey, many teachers work very hard, but some of them still use old methods. They often teach grammar and translation instead of speaking and listening. This makes students afraid of making mistakes and less active in class. Teachers should learn and use new methods that make students talk more. They can join workshops or online courses to improve their teaching skills. Schools should also support teachers by giving them new materials and tools. When teachers feel motivated and prepared, their lessons become more interesting.

In conclusion, foreign language learning and teaching in Turkey can be improved with some important changes. Classes should focus more on speaking, listening, and real communication instead of just grammar. Teachers should use new methods and technology to make lessons more interesting. Students should also practice English outside the classroom as much as they can. Watching English videos, reading short texts, or joining English clubs can help a lot. The government and schools should also support teachers with training and better materials. If everyone works together, students in Turkey will be able to speak English more easily and confidently.

  2. The introduction is as well written and smooth as it can get. The problems and the solutions given are amazing, but for the second one’s solution, there could have been a few more student-focused suggestions. However, other than this, both the examples and solutions given are great, and the conclusion part sums everything up perfectly.
