Have you ever thought why Turkiye is bad at English? Despite English has been taught for decades in many places like at schools, courses etc. Turkish people still struggle to speak English fluently and easily. This is result of wrong teaching methods, exam-oriented education, and limitation of sources for learning. In this essay i will discuss these problems and possible solutions to improve English education.
Firstly, most common problem is grammar-based education. Teachers only want students to focus on rules and memorize everything. So real learning is not happening. It’s mean that people knows rules but when it comes to talking they can’t do it.They afraid of making mistakes and feel under pressure. To improve this situation teachers and learners should focus more on communication and practice rather than memorize the rules.
Secondly,teacher-centered classes. In Turkiye most English teaching works like this: Teacher talks while students only listen and the student only have passive skills such as listening and reading. This method prevents them from gaining active skills. As a result they become passive learners who cannot communicate effectively. In language learning practice, being active are really important but in this system we cannot do this freely. To solve this problem, students should be more active in class, can take part in more group activities and lessons can be more conversational style.
Lastly, many people in Turkiye do not have access to enough materials such as English books because they are expensive, speaking clubs because not much people see speaking practice as a priority and don’t spend time or money on such activities, lack of online materials for students is another problem. Many useful language learning applications are paid and most students cannot afford to use them and the worst is native speakers. To solve this, government should provide more materials, online tools, interactive environments etc.
In conclusion,Turkey needs more practice in study, more communication-based education and better access to overall materials.
