The Optimal Age for Starting Foreign Language Learning

Foreign languages bring a lot of benefits to people. So “The optimal starting age for language learning” has always been a discussion topic among linguists. When should language learning start? From childhood or later? To me they both have their own benefits.


Childhood is a very efficient period for language learning. Young brains are better at understanding and processing information than others. That helps children to speak fluently. Also they use language without minding mistakes and it assists the speed of language developing (Curran&Baidak, 2023). But starting to learn a foreign language from an early age could cause some problems too. Children might have a hitch on their main language which diseffects their lessons and relationships with their friends or mix two languages.


On the other hand, adulthood has the benefit of maturity which is apart from childhood. Since the brain is more advanced and productive in this era, adults can learn grammatical rules consciously and broaden their vocabulary systematically via various ways. Also their motivation can last longer if they learn a language for educational purposes or their work.


However, according to Orzechowska (2024), “the Critical Period Hypothesis proposes that there is a biologically determined window of time during which language acquisition is most effective, and this period typically ends around puberty” (p. 2). This is a scientific minus for adults. But people’s effort is the key in foreign language learning.


In conclusion, there isn’t any ideal age for language learning. Every age group has different opportunities and boundaries. The most important point in learning is never giving up.
